A multiple ligament injury is when two or more ligaments in the knee are damaged, which can make the knee joint very unstable.
These types of injuries usually happen as a result of sports or traffic accidents. As well as damaging ligaments, these injuries can disrupt blood supply (vascular injury) and nerves (nerve injury) within the leg, which may require surgery.
The knee will be extremely painful with swelling immediately after the injury.
Multiple ligament injuries will usually require surgery to reconstruct the damaged ligaments and to treat the neurovascular injuries.
