We are committed to enabling research and innovation in the science of orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine

Fortius Research and Education Foundation

The Fortius Research and Education Foundation is a registered charity, founded to improve the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic and other related musculoskeletal disorders. These might vary from acute soft tissue sporting injuries to long term conditions such as arthritis and chronic pain syndromes. The Foundation aims to achieve this by encouraging and supporting research and education in these fields.

The Fortius Research and Education Foundation was awarded charity status by the Charity Commission in March 2017. (Charity no. 1172103).

Our work

The Fortius Education and Research Foundation (FREF) operates in England and Wales through sponsoring and supporting research and by making grants to other individuals and organisations to carry out research. It also funds some Fellowships at Fortius Clinic which allow young surgeons, often from overseas, to carry out research and to observe and learn from the Fortius Clinicians in order to gain specialist experience and knowledge.

There are no restrictions on the type of research we support, other than being related to musculoskeletal conditions and treatments. It could include, laboratory -based studies, biomechanical investigations, the development and trials of different surgical techniques or evaluating different types of rehabilitation. Which projects to support are decided by the Trustees of the Foundation.

Donations

Donations to FREF will be used by the foundation to:

  • Fund projects by providing grants to cover costs of materials, equipment and services.

  • Support the organisation/provision of conferences, exhibitions, lectures and other educational activities.

  • Maintain and fund scholarships for education and research in the field of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions and associated disorders.

The Foundation will initially make small grants to assist with research and education in specific areas that the trustees have identified as likely to make a valuable contribution to the field of orthopaedic medicine.

Priority Areas

The current priority areas that the trustees have identified as consistent with the Foundation’s charitable objects are:

  • Sports medicine - including injury prevention, injury prediction and screening techniques.
  • Operative treatments for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions including development and evaluation of new treatments and techniques, post-operative care and rehabilitation and prevention/treatment of complications.
  • Non-operative treatments for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
  • Radiology - including developing and improving techniques for diagnosing and monitoring musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Biomechanics - relating to injury mechanisms, surgical treatments and rehabilitation.
  • Basic science - relating to degenerative arthritis and musculoskeletal healing.
