Dr Ritan Mehta MBE is a Consultant in Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine at Fortius Clinic and one of the UK’s leading experts in elite sports medicine, musculoskeletal injury management and female athlete health. He is Head of Women’s Medical at The Football Association and has served as Team Doctor to the England Women’s Senior Football Team (the Lionesses) since 2014.
In 2026, Dr Mehta was awarded an MBE in The King’s New Year Honours List for services to football, recognising his longstanding contribution to the women’s game and his role in supporting the Lionesses through a historic era of success, including back-to-back UEFA Women’s European Championship titles in 2022 and 2025.
With more than 15 years’ experience working at the highest levels of international sport, Dr Mehta has supported athletes and teams across major global competitions, including FIFA Women’s World Cups, UEFA Women’s European Championships and the Tokyo Olympic Games, where he served as Chief Medical Officer for Team GB Women’s Football. He has also held senior medical roles within Premier League and professional football, including Reading FC and Watford FC.
Dr Mehta combines elite-level expertise with a patient-centred approach, helping individuals of all ages and activity levels recover from injury, manage pain and return confidently to sport, exercise and everyday life. His clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, including Muscle injuries, tendon injuries, osteoarthritis, hip and groin pain, shoulder injuries and lower limb conditions. He is experienced in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injection therapies.
After qualifying from King's College London in 2003, Dr Mehta initially trained in General Practice before completing a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine with distinction and specialist training on the prestigious London SEM rotation. He remains actively involved in research, education and the advancement of sports medicine. He has published and presented nationally and internationally on topics including football medicine, female athlete health and injury prevention.
