Dr Jon Houghton is one the UK’s most senior and respected opinions in Sport and Exercise Medicine and Rheumatology. He has extensive elite sport experience and regularly consults to multiple premiership teams, the ECB, RFU and UK Sports Institute and Olympic athletes. He has extensive experience in treating elite athletes, city workers, weekend warriors, adolescent sports injuries and those in middle and later life who want to remain fit and healthy.
He worked at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley court for 8 years where he ran the lower limb rehab unit before moving in to full time sports and private practice initially at London Bridge Hospital before joining Fortius Clinic in 2016 where he is the elite sport service lead.
He has a specialist interest in tendon pathology, bone stress injuries, hip and groin pain and inflammatory arthritis. He initiated a complex lower limb tendon clinic in 2017 alongside Mr Jarrod Antflick and the surgical team at Fortius Clinic which regularly treats national and international athletes. He runs an elite bone stress clinic utilising the latest in imaging and medical therapies to accelerate recovery from bone injury. He also has a wide range of experience in upper and lower limb overuse and running injuries, bone stress injuries, Pars fracture, adolescent overuse injuries, hip and groin pain, exercise induced leg pain and injury rehabilitation. His rheumatology interests are bone stress, gout, inflammatory spinal conditions and inflammatory joint conditions that affect young or athletic people.
Dr Houghton has excellent communication skills and promotes a multidisciplinary approach, liaising effectively with physiotherapists, osteopaths/chiropractors, pain doctors and orthopaedic surgeons to get the best results for his patients. He understands the significant effects that injury and pain can have on normal day to day life and promotes physical activity in all his treatment plans
He has worked for the Football Association of Wales since 2010 and as Chief Medical Officer from 2013 including Euro 2016, Euro 2020 and the World Cup 2022. He has been lead doctor for Surrey County Cricket Club since 2015 including Championship wins in 2018, 2022, 2023 as well as doctor to the Oval Invincibles Hundred Tournament champions in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
