Aali Sheen

Consultant Hernia and Groin Surgeon

MD FRCS (Eng) FRCS (Gen Surg) Hon. FEBS (AWS)

Professor Aali Sheen is a Senior Consultant General Surgeon who has been practising in Manchester since his NHS appointment in 2005. He specialises in all abdominal wall hernias, with particular expertise in groin hernias, sportsman’s hernia (inguinal disruption), chronic groin pain, mesh-related complications, and ACNES (anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome) as a cause of chronic, unexplained abdominal pain.

He authored the world’s first consensus statement on the sportsman’s groin, providing a comprehensive and evidence-based rationale for diagnosing and treating this condition, and establishing the internationally accepted term “inguinal disruption.”

Professor Sheen has extensive experience treating patients ranging from recreational athletes to elite professionals. He performs both open and laparoscopic hernia surgery, tailoring his approach to the needs and goals of each individual.

He served as President of the British Hernia Society (2020–2022) and was Congress President for the European Hernia Society Annual Meeting in Manchester in 2022. He has also served on the Scientific and Awards Committees of the American Hernia Society.

Professor Sheen is regularly invited to speak at international hernia conferences, including meetings across Asia-Pacific and Australia/New Zealand, and continues to contribute to the global advancement of hernia surgery.
