To celebrate World Radiography Day, we meet one of our many amazing Radiographers to find out more about her role, and what led her to Fortius.
My name is Megan, and I am a Diagnostic Radiographer. Working as a radiographer allows me to make a real difference in a patient’s journey, even if the interaction is brief. It involves a blend of skills and empathy to put patients at ease during their scans and instill confidence in them—especially in the MRI scanner, which can be daunting. This role requires a combination of technical skills informed by physics, along with knowledge of anatomy and pathology, to provide the best care and imaging possible.
Being a radiographer has also enabled me an interesting and varied career. From living and working in Hong Kong as a student to working at a major trauma centre in London, my experiences have been diverse and enriching. I then transitioned into research, working with functional MRI and pursuing my Master’s degree which involved scanning brains to study the structure and function of different areas, identifying patterns in recovery from different pathologies i.e. between stroke and cancer.
Having worked in research for a time I then moved back to the clinical environment - leading me to my role at Fortius. It's a rewarding position where as radiographers we sit within a wider team of health professionals and interact with the majority of patients as we help inform their diagnosis, operation planning, to being in theatre with them during surgery, and providing post-op imaging and follow up care.
