Steve Betts, 68, was one of the first Stryker Mako patients to have two bilateral total knee replacements in one surgery at the at Fortius Joint Replacement Centre.
Before surgery, Steve had suffered with knee pain over a number of years, initially he was able to manage this and still take part in the activities he loved like sailing and skiing. However, his condition got worse and his mobility reduced drastically, not only was he unable to practice sports but, even day-to-day tasks like walking to the shops or taking the dog for a walk became impossible.
At this point hSteve decided to seek help and got in contact with Mr David Houlihan-Burne after being referred to the Fortius Clinic.
At his initial appointment with Mr Houlihan-Burne, Steve had both of his knees scanned and was advised that he needed both total knee replacements.
David advised the best course of action would be to undergo surgery at the Fortius Joint Replacement Centre using the Stryker Mako robotic arm to assist in surgery. The technology allows a personalised surgical experience delivered with precision, reducing pain and resulting in quicker recovery times.
Steve agreed to go ahead with the surgery at the Fortius Joint Replacement Centre. Prior to his operation, Steve was informed about the Enhanced Recovery Pathway Programme which is designed to support physical recovery for patients and explain the best route for recovery.
Steve said: “There was no pain during or after the procedure. The day after surgery I was standing, I couldn’t believe it. Two weeks after surgery I was able to go back to the gym and was driving after just four weeks! Each step in my recovery has certainly been a milestone for me, the fact that I can now sail again is just incredible.”
Since the operation he has gone from strength to strength and as an avid cyclist and sailor has been able to swiftly return to his favourite hobbies.
