Saving Conor's Budding Rugby Career

As an active rugby player, Conor has been playing the game since he was 7 years old and enjoyed playing at a high level. Rugby is a big part of his life and his talent was recognised at an early age: He participated in both the U16s and U18s Wasps Academy team, captained North Midlands U18s and has recently started pre season at Loughborough University as well as at Moseley Rugby Club.

In early 2019,  Conor's dreams of making it the big league were abruptly halted after suffering a catastrophic injury. During what Conor throught would be an average match, he took a direct hit to his knee causing it to crunch and buckle.

Immediately Conor's knee started to swell, and from that point onwards any form of movement was a struggle, even just walking caused him pain. He explained "I knew something was wrong straight away as the pain was immense."

Condition and Diagnosis

Initially, Conor and his parents visited the NHS accident and emergency department, there he had an MRI scan and was given the diagnosis that his knee injury was a torn ACL and torn meniscus. Conor explained "When I heard the news I was absolutely devastated." He was advised surgery would be the best course of action and was initially scheduled in for May of that year, however due to extended waiting lists, this was repeatedly rescheduled.

Conor's parents believed it would be best for him to get treatment sooner rather than later, so decided to investigate what private surgery options were available. They were introduced to the Fortius Clinic through a family friend, a professional rugby player who had previously played for England, Sale Sharks and other top tier rugby clubs in France. He had also suffered a similar ACL injury and had been operated on at Fortius, he explained "Fortius have a reputation for being one of the most professional and high level clinics in the country, if not the world".

After being recommended to Fortius, in early July Conor and his family booked an initial consultation with Mr Andy Williams, a Consultant Knee Surgeon renowned for his expertise in knee ligament problems. Conor said, "From the moment I met him, I felt at ease and comforted by his overall demeanour and attitude towards the injury.", Andy reassured him that there was a 95% chance that after the surgery and adequate recovery, he would be back on the rugby field at the top of his game.

Conor explained "Mr Williams just confirmed what I had already known, however he was much more positive about my return to sport which is very important to me as it takes up a large percentage of my day to day life. The months before going to Fortius I had a very negative view upon my return to sport and combined with my upcoming A levels I was under a lot of stress at the time."

Treatment and Recovery

Mr Williams explained in great detail the risks involved of the surgery. Speaking with Andy and having him reassure Conor about returning to sport was a great relief, him and his parents agreed this would be the best course of action and he was scheduled in for surgery to save his Meniscus.

Conor had a Hamstring graft put into his right knee as well as having his Meniscus stitched back together. In addition, Mr Williams sanded the bone down in order to allow for full mobility as this was impacted from a previous operation.

Immediately after surgery, Mr Williams confirmed to Conor that it had been successful which was such a relief! It was explained that he would not be weight bearing for 8 weeks as he needed to give the Meniscus the best chance at healing. However, the most important advice was to keep Conor's leg as straight as possible.

Conor found the first few weeks of recovery extremely challenging as he didn’t leave the house and was still experiencing quite a bit of pain, although the prescribed painkillers did help with this. He is used to training three or four times a week, so having to do no sport at all was very tough.

At present, almost 15 months after surgery, Conor is over the moon with his progress,  he has no issues with his knee on and off the pitch and has returned to the level of rugby in which he can still pursue a career in. Conor explained "This is all down to the hard work and effort by all the members at Fortius Clinic, whether that be Mr Williams himself, the physios teaching me how to walk with the crutches or even the chefs who cooked my dinner. I certainly felt that I chose the right option going to Fortius Clinic, and I cannot thank you enough for all the support you have given me!"
