It’s been another busy year for Fortius Clinic, particularly with the addition of Fortius Clinic London. We take a look back at the highlights of 2023 and some of the amazing achievements by our consultants.
Fortius were delighted to support 23-year-old Josie Smailes during her training for the Ironman World Championships. Josie came 8th in the under 25s category finishing in an overall time of 11.00.34. She was the best of the British under 25s which gives her an automatic qualification for the 2024 Ironman World Championships.
Fortius sponsored the IC Philanthropy Foundation dinner at the All England Lawn Tennis Club to celebrate the career of tennis and broadcasting legend Sue Barker CBE.
The Foundation supports tennis educational programmes around the world for young people from disadvantaged communities.
Harlequins hosted a Sports Injuries educational event at its home ground The Stoop with Fortius as part of our partnership with the club.
The evening was led by Consultant Knee Surgeon and ex-England Rugby player Mr Jonathan Webb with presentations from our consultants Mr Simon Ball, Mr Steve Corbett and Dr Anthony Waring. The event also involved Harlequins medical team members Mike Lancaster and Katy Hornby, and Harlequins player Jack Walker.
In June we completed the acquisition of dedicated orthopaedic hospital Schoen Clinic London (renamed Fortius Clinic London).
This gives us extra capacity, options and the flexibility to support our consultants and patients at a dedicated Centre of Excellence in central London.
A number of Fortius consultants supported players at this year's Wimbledon tournament, including Sports and Exercise Consultants Dr Moiz Moghal and Dr Mark Ridgewell.
Consultant Knee Surgeon and former England rugby player Mr Jonathan Webb was given the honour of presenting the England squad with their caps and medals at the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony in Le Touquet, France.
Fortius consultants Dr Ritan Mehta, Dr Justin Lee and Mr Ioan Tudur Jones were among the speakers at the British Association of Sports & Exercise Medicine 2023 Annual Conference at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
Consultant Knee Surgeons Mr Adil Ajuied, Mr Giles Heilpern and Mr Martin Goddard were part of a group of eight orthopaedic surgeons who spent 10 days at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on a surgical relief trip.
During their stay the group performed around 30 surgical procedures. They held daily educational seminars for surgeons from across East Africa and also taught in theatre. Fortius was one of many companies to donate approximately £2 million worth of equipment for the trip.
Consultant Foot and Ankle Surgeon Professor James Calder was honoured to meet King Charles at the Humanitarian Reception at Buckingham Palace. He was invited in recognition of his work with humanitarian agencies in areas of conflict, including the training of surgeons in Ukraine.
Research on the Determinants of Performance in Professional Soccer Players at 2 and 5 Years After ACL Reconstruction was published by Consultant Knee Surgeon Mr Andy Williams and his co-authors.
The study, which involved 200 cases of primary ACL reconstruction in professional soccer players, was published in the December 2023 issue of The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
