What is hip arthritis?

Hip arthritis develops when the smooth cartilage covering the ball and socket becomes worn or damaged. The joint can then become painful, stiff and less able to move freely.

What causes it?

There may be more than one cause or contributing factor. These can include:

  • Wear and changes in the joint over time
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Femoroacetabular impingement
  • A previous injury

What are the symptoms?

Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:

  • A dull ache in the hip, groin, buttock or thigh
  • Pain when walking and a possible limp
  • Difficulty with stairs, shoes or toenail care
  • Stiffness and reduced movement
  • Night pain that affects sleep

How is it diagnosed?

Your consultant will examine the hip and discuss how symptoms affect you. X-rays usually confirm arthritis, with MRI or CT used where more detail about cartilage or an underlying cause is needed.

We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through what the results mean for you.
