The Role of Physicians in Sport and Exercise Medicine
Sport and Exercise Medicine physicians play a central role in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal, sporting and exercise-related conditions. Rather than focusing solely on an individual injury or scan finding, they take a holistic approach, considering the patient’s symptoms, general health, physical activity, lifestyle and individual goals.
The physicians in our group are highly experienced clinicians and recognised leaders in their fields. They are equally accustomed to helping recreational and everyday patients who simply want to remain active, as they are to managing athletes at every level, up to and including elite and professional sport. This breadth of experience allows the same principles of high-quality assessment, rehabilitation and performance-focused care to be tailored to the needs of each individual.
A key part of the physician’s role is establishing an accurate diagnosis and determining which findings are genuinely relevant to the patient’s symptoms. Where appropriate, this may involve investigations such as MRI, ultrasound, X-ray or blood tests. The physician then develops an individualised management plan, which may include rehabilitation, exercise prescription, medication, injection treatments and advice on returning to sport, exercise and normal activity. Treatment is tailored to the individual. Goals may range from walking comfortably and maintaining independence to returning to the gym, recreational sport or elite competition.
Our physicians work closely with an experienced multidisciplinary team, including physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists, radiologists, orthopaedic and other surgical teams, and pain-management specialists. This collaborative approach ensures patients receive the right expertise at the right stage, with the aim of restoring function, building resilience and helping each person achieve the activities and goals that matter to them.
