Professor Richard Keen Consultant in Metabolic Bone Disease

Richard graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1988. After training in general rheumatology, he developed his interest in osteoporosis and rare bone diseases. He completed his PhD examining the genetic epidemiology of postmenopausal osteoporosis and was the recipient of Young Investigator Awards from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the European Calcified Tissue Society. In 1999 he was appointed as Consultant in Metabolic Bone Disease at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, UK.

Professor Keen is experienced in the management of patients with osteoporosis and other rarer bone diseases including Paget’s disease, osteogenesis imperfecta, X-linked hypophosphataemic rickets, fibrous dysplasia and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). He also works with athletes from sports such as athletics, rugby union and football, and has expertise in management of bone-related problems such as stress fractures, bone stress response/bone marrow oedema syndromes, osteitis pubis and myositis ossificans.
