Tailor’s bunion

A tailor’s bunion, or bunionette, is a prominent bump at the base of the little toe on the outer side of the foot. It can rub against footwear and become painful or inflamed.

What is tailor’s bunion?

A tailor’s bunion, or bunionette, is a prominent bump at the base of the little toe on the outer side of the foot. It can rub against footwear and become painful or inflamed. The bump forms where the fifth metatarsal, the long bone leading to the little toe, meets the toe joint.

What causes it?

There may be more than one cause or contributing factor. These can include:

  • The natural shape or width of the foot
  • The little toe or fifth metatarsal bowing outwards
  • Shoes that place pressure on the outer forefoot
  • In many cases, there is no single clear cause

What are the symptoms?

Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:

  • A visible bump at the base of the little toe
  • Pain when wearing shoes
  • Redness, swelling or inflammation over the bump
  • Tenderness along the outer side of the foot

How is it diagnosed?

Your consultant will examine the foot and usually arrange weight-bearing X-rays to assess the alignment of the little toe and fifth metatarsal.

We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through what the results mean for you.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the cause, the severity of your symptoms and the activities you want to return to. We’ll help you understand your options before you decide what happens next.

  • Wider shoes with a softer upper
  • Padding around the tender area
  • Insoles made to reduce pressure
  • Changes to footwear and aggravating activity
