Meniscal tear

A meniscal tear affects one of the two pieces of cartilage that cushion and stabilise the knee. Many tears can be managed without surgery, while others may need repair or removal of the unstable damaged section.

What causes a meniscal tear?

A traumatic tear can happen after a sudden twist or impact, particularly during sport. Degenerative tears develop as the meniscus becomes less flexible with age and can happen after repeated loading or a relatively small movement.

What are the symptoms?

  • pain around the joint line
  • swelling that may build over several hours or days
  • clicking, catching or a feeling that the knee is locking
  • difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee
  • pain during twisting, squatting or kneeling

Some degenerative tears cause pain without obvious swelling or loss of movement.

How is it diagnosed?

Your specialist will examine the knee and ask how the symptoms began. X-rays can show arthritis or another bone problem, while an MRI scan can show the meniscus and associated ligament damage.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the type, size and position of the tear, your symptoms and the health of the rest of the knee.
