Ganglion cysts of the foot and ankle

A ganglion is a harmless lump filled with a jelly-like fluid. It usually develops from the lining of a joint or the covering around a tendon. Some ganglions are easy to see or feel. Others sit deeper in the foot and may cause an ache without an obvious lump. They can change size, disappear and return.

What is a ganglion?

A ganglion is a harmless lump filled with a jelly-like fluid. It usually develops from the lining of a joint or the covering around a tendon. Some ganglions are easy to see or feel. Others sit deeper in the foot and may cause an ache without an obvious lump. They can change size, disappear and return.

What causes it?

There may be more than one reason why this develops. Possible causes or contributing factors include:

  • The cause is often unknown
  • A previous injury
  • Repeated strain around a joint or tendon

What are the symptoms?

Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:

  • A lump or swelling on the foot or ankle
  • A lump that changes size or comes and goes
  • Discomfort when wearing shoes
  • Aching around a joint
  • Numbness if the cyst presses on a nearby nerve

How is it diagnosed?

Your consultant will examine the lump and ask how it has changed. An ultrasound or MRI scan may be used to assess a deeper ganglion. X-rays can check for arthritis in the nearby joint.

We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through the results, so you understand what they mean for you.

How is it treated?

A ganglion does not always need treatment. The right approach depends on whether it causes pain, affects footwear, presses on a nerve or limits activity. Together, we’ll build a plan around your needs, your recovery and the activities that matter most to you.

  • Observation if the lump is harmless and not causing problems
  • More comfortable footwear
  • Pain relief, if advised
  • Needle aspiration to drain the fluid
  • Follow-up if the lump changes or returns

Your consultant will help you understand which options may be right for you and when your progress should be reviewed.
