Focal chondral damage
Focal chondral damage affects a specific area of the smooth cartilage that covers the ends of the bones in your knee. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms, protect the joint and help you return to comfortable movement.
What causes focal chondral damage?
Any of the following, a twist, fall or direct blow to the knee, another injury ( such as an ACL tear), osteochondritis dissecans (where a piece of cartilage and the bone beneath it becomes loose), early degenerative change that may develop into osteoarthritis
What are the symptoms?
You may experience pain, swelling and reduced movement. Cartilage itself does not contain nerves, so a small area of damage may not cause symptoms at first. If a loose fragment catches inside the joint, the knee may lock or movement may become painful.
How is it diagnosed?
Your consultant will examine the knee and may arrange X-rays, an MRI scan or a CT scan to understand the location and extent of the damage. In some cases, knee arthroscopy allows the surgeon to inspect the joint directly and treat it during the same procedure.
How is it treated?
Joint surface cartilage has a limited ability to repair itself. Small areas of damage may settle and cause few symptoms, while larger or persistent injuries may need specialist treatment.

Treatment routes for focal chondral damage
If symptoms are manageable, your consultant may recommend activity changes, physiotherapy and a plan to improve strength and movement while monitoring the knee.

How to pay
We offer flexible options depending on how you choose to access care at Fortius. Whichever option you choose, we’ll help make the process clear and straightforward from the start.

Private medical insurance
If your care is covered by private medical insurance, we’ll usually invoice your insurer directly. Please check your policy in advance and request an authorisation code if your insurer requires one. You’ll be responsible for paying any policy excess or costs that aren’t covered by your insurance.

Paying for yourself
You don’t need private medical insurance to access care at Fortius. If you’re paying for your own treatment, our team will explain the costs clearly and provide a personalised quote before you decide whether to go ahead.
