Bunions (hallux valgus)
A bunion is a painful bump at the base of the big toe. It develops as the big toe moves towards the smaller toes and the bone on the inside of the foot becomes more prominent. The bump can rub against footwear, causing pain and inflammation. Other problems may develop alongside a bunion, including hammer toes, corns, calluses and pain beneath the ball of the foot.
What is a bunion?
A bunion is a painful bump at the base of the big toe. It develops as the big toe moves towards the smaller toes and the bone on the inside of the foot becomes more prominent. The bump can rub against footwear, causing pain and inflammation. Other problems may develop alongside a bunion, including hammer toes, corns, calluses and pain beneath the ball of the foot.
What causes it?
There may be more than one reason why this develops. Possible causes or contributing factors include:
- A family history of bunions
- Tight-fitting shoes or high heels
- Flat feet
- Muscular imbalance
- Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis
- In some cases, there is no obvious cause
What are the symptoms?
Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:
- Pain and inflammation around the big toe joint
- A visible bump on the inside of the foot
- Shoes becoming uncomfortable
- Difficulty walking or taking part in activities
- The big toe moving further towards the smaller toes
How is it diagnosed?
Your consultant will examine your foot, discuss your symptoms and assess how the bunion affects your walking and footwear. X-rays are usually used to show the alignment of the bones and the condition of the joint.
We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through the results, so you understand what they mean for you.
How is it treated?
Treatment depends on the severity of the bunion and how much it affects you. Non-surgical options can relieve pressure and pain, but surgery is the only way to physically change the shape of the foot. Together, we’ll build a plan around your needs, your recovery and the activities that matter most to you.
- Toe spacers or alignment splints
- Padded insoles
- Advice on wider or more supportive footwear
- Custom-made shoes where needed
- Pain relief or anti-inflammatory medicine, if advised
Your consultant will help you understand which options may be right for you and when your progress should be reviewed.

How to pay
We offer flexible options depending on how you choose to access care at Fortius. Whichever option you choose, we’ll help make the process clear and straightforward from the start.

Private medical insurance
If your care is covered by private medical insurance, we’ll usually invoice your insurer directly. Please check your policy in advance and request an authorisation code if your insurer requires one. You’ll be responsible for paying any policy excess or costs that aren’t covered by your insurance.

Paying for yourself
