Ankle fracture
An ankle fracture is a break in one or more bones around the ankle joint. It commonly affects the bony bumps on the inside or outside of the ankle, known as the medial and lateral malleoli. The back of the shin bone at the ankle joint can also fracture. Some fractures remain stable, while others allow the joint to move out of position.
What is an ankle fracture?
An ankle fracture is a break in one or more bones around the ankle joint. It commonly affects the bony bumps on the inside or outside of the ankle, known as the medial and lateral malleoli. The back of the shin bone at the ankle joint can also fracture. Some fractures remain stable, while others allow the joint to move out of position.
What causes it?
There may be more than one reason why this develops. Possible causes or contributing factors include:
- Twisting the ankle with enough force to break a bone
- A direct blow, such as a tackle during sport
- A fall
- Jumping and landing awkwardly
What are the symptoms?
Everyone experiences symptoms differently, but you may notice:
- Severe pain and difficulty or inability to walk
- Rapid swelling
- A cracking sound at the time of injury
- The ankle appearing out of shape
- In a severe fracture, a wound with bone visible through the skin
If bone is visible through the skin, this is a medical emergency. Call 999 or go to your nearest Accident & Emergency department immediately.
How is it diagnosed?
Your ankle will be examined and X-rayed to confirm the fracture and assess the position of the bones. A CT scan may be arranged for a more detailed view of a complex injury.
We’ll explain any tests clearly and talk you through the results, so you understand what they mean for you.
How is it treated?
Treatment depends on which bones are broken, whether the ankle is stable and whether the joint remains in the correct position. Together, we’ll build a plan around your needs, your recovery and the activities that matter most to you.
- A plaster cast or supportive boot
- Crutches to keep weight off the foot
- Pain relief or anti-inflammatory medicine, if advised
- Follow-up X-rays to check that the bones remain in position
- Physiotherapy as healing progresses
Your consultant will help you understand which options may be right for you and when your progress should be reviewed.
