Mr Lorenzo Garagnani is a highly specialised Consultant Hand & Wrist Surgeon who treats the whole spectrum of disorders of the hand and wrist in both adult and paediatric patients.
Mr Garagnani was a founder and first joint Lead of the OrthoPlastic Hand Unit of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London.
Lorenzo Garagnani is an internationally recognised expert in wrist surgery and in the treatment of congenital anomalies of the hand and wrist.
He qualified with a Master's Degree in Medicine and Surgery at Bologna University (Italy) then he trained in Trauma and Orthopaedics in the prestigious Bologna Specialist Training Programme, mainly based at the world-renowned Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute.
Mr Garagnani completed his sub-specialist training in hand and wrist surgery (complementing his Orthopaedic background with Plastic & Reconstructive surgery and Microsurgery training) in centres of excellence in the UK, where he was Hand Fellow at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, at the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department of the Oxford University Hospitals, and at the Hand Clinic in Windsor. In 2009, he was appointed Specialist Hand Surgeon at Humanitas Clinical Institute in Rozzano, Milan (Italy). Between 2009 and 2012 he worked in London, as locum Consultant at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and as Hand Fellow in paediatric hand surgery and congenital hand anomalies at the Plastic Surgery Department of the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
In 2012, Mr Garagnani was appointed Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at the Department of Hand Surgery and Microsurgery of the University Hospital Policlinico di Modena (Italy), where he jointly led the busy Paediatric Hand Surgery/Congenital Upper Limb and Hand Anomalies Service and run a busy complex hand and wrist trauma and elective surgery practice.
In 2015, he was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Hand and Wrist Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.
Mr Garagnani is Honorary Reader at the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine of King's College London University. His regular activities include supervision of and teaching to Specialist Trainees, Senior Hand Fellows and medical students, both from the UK and abroad.
He is the Director of the Guy's and St Thomas' London Upper Limb Training Centre & Fellowship of IBRA (International Bone Research Association) and current President of the Italian Medical Society of Great Britain (IMSoGB) and of the Hand Aesthetics International (HAI) Society. He is also past president of the Paediatric Hand International Society of Surgeons (PHISOS).
Mr Garagnani holds the European Diploma in Hand Surgery and is an Examiner and Examination Committee Member of the European Board of Hand Surgery (EBHS) of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH).
Lorenzo Garagnani's work and research are focused on new minimally invasive techniques that allow reduction of surgical morbidity in hand and wrist surgery, and he has also been world’s first specialist hand surgeon to develop and teach internationally anatomically based injection techniques for hand rejuvenation. In addition to his surgical training and career, Mr Garagnani is also a fully qualified expert in Aesthetic Medicine.
In 2022, Mr Garagnani was awarded the Knighthood of the Order of the Star of Italy (OSI) by the President of Italy, for his international surgical career and volunteering with coordination of a task force of doctors during the Covid-19 pandemic.
