Mr. Al Getgood is a Specialist Knee Surgeon focussing on the full spectrum of knee surgery excluding knee replacement procedures.  He has extensive experience in dealing with both professional and amateur athletes through his past roles as Chief of Surgery at the world renowned Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic in Doha, Qatar, and as Fellowship Director at the internationally recognised Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine clinic in London, Ontario, Canada.

Areas of expertise:

•    Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction (both primary and revision)
•    Meniscus repair
•    Multiligament reconstruction and knee dislocation
•    Joint preservation techniques including realignment osteotomy, meniscus transplantation and articular cartilage restoration
•    Patellofemoral instability including lower limb alignment correction and trochleoplasty

Originally from Northern Ireland, he underwent training in Edinburgh, Cambridge and Coventry before moving to Canada in 2012. 

As an Associate Professor at Western University in Canada, he was successful in securing over $10 million in grants supporting his research program. He is the co-principal investigator of the STABILITY 1 and 2 Trials. 
STABILITY 1 was a practice changing trial reducing reinjury rates using lateral extra-articular tenodesis. It has resulted in the following awards:

•    J Edouard Samson Research award from the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation in May 2021, the premier research award for career research in Canadian Orthopaedics 
•    The American Journal of Sports Medicine Hughston Award in 2023
•    The American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) O’Donoghue Sports Injury Award in 2019
•    The International Society of Arthroscopic Knee surgery and Orthopaedic Sports medicine (ISAKOS) Jan Gillquist Award in 2019 
•    ISAKOS Albert Trillat Young Investigator award in 2017

Concluding in June 2027, the STABILITY 2 Trial will be the largest randomised clinical trial in ACL reconstruction history and will further optimise surgical decision making for ACL injured patients.
