Ms Susan Alexander - Professional Bio
My approach to shoulder care
After more than 20 years specialising in all aspects of shoulder surgery, my consultations are not just about deciding whether you need surgery; they are about helping you make the right decision for your shoulder and your future.
Whether you've had to stop playing sport, are struggling at work, can't lift your children, or are simply exhausted because you can't sleep through the night, I want to understand how your shoulder problem is affecting your life. That is where every consultation begins.
After more than two decades, I still find every consultation fascinating because every person brings a different story. Understanding that story is the foundation of providing the right care.
I treat all shoulder conditions, including shoulder instability, rotator cuff tears, ac joint injuries, fractures, arthritis and frozen shoulder. The first step is making an accurate diagnosis. The second question is:
Can I help you achieve your goals without surgery?
I genuinely love shoulder surgery, but only when it's the right treatment at the right time. I believe in treating the whole person, not just the shoulder. Surgery is only one part of that approach, and often it isn't needed at all. My goal is to help you get back to doing the things that matter most to you in the least disruptive way to your regular routine. My role is to give you an honest opinion, explain your options clearly and help you choose the treatment that best fits your circumstances. Patients often tell me they feel genuinely listened to and involved in making decisions about their care. To me, that partnership is one of the most important parts of being a surgeon.
Throughout my career I have combined clinical practice with research, teaching and innovation. I completed a PhD in Molecular Biology and an MSc with distinction in Applied Biomechanics before dedicating my practice exclusively to shoulder surgery. I've taught shoulder surgery throughout my career, from medical students to consultant surgeons, including helping to develop practical arthroscopic training through the Watanabe Club.
I am currently President of the Independent Doctors Federation, where I work with doctors, healthcare organisations and policymakers to raise professional standards and improve the quality of independent healthcare. I'm passionate about creating a culture where excellent patient care is built on communication, collaboration, professionalism and trust. These principles are just as important in the consulting room as they are across the wider healthcare system.
One of the greatest privileges of my work is the final follow-up appointment. It's when I see someone walk back into the consulting room with a smile, no longer thinking about their shoulder because they're back to living their life on their terms. Those moments remind me why I chose this profession in the first place.
Your shoulder. Your treatment. Your choice.
