Mr. David Sweetnam - Professional Bio
Mr David Sweetnam is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in London specialising exclusively in knee conditions. He has more than 30 years of NHS experience, including over 20 years as a Consultant and 10 years as Clinical Lead in a busy orthopaedic and trauma department.
Having qualified from University College London in 1987, where he was awarded the Fitton Prize in Orthopaedic Surgery, Mr Sweetnam completed specialist orthopaedic training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Registrar Training Scheme. He gained his specialist qualification in 1995 and subsequently undertook a specialist knee fellowship in Australia, focusing on joint replacement surgery and sports injuries.
Mr Sweetnam was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Whittington Hospital in 1998, where he worked for over two decades before focusing solely on private practice in 2018. He treats the full spectrum of knee problems, from sports injuries and meniscal tears to ligament injuries, cartilage damage, knee arthritis and knee replacement.
He is committed to careful, individualised decision-making and strongly believes that surgery should be undertaken only when it offers a clear benefit. Many patients can be treated successfully without an operation, through accurate diagnosis, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and other conservative measures. When surgery is required, he offers extensive experience in arthroscopic knee surgery, ACL reconstruction, cartilage procedures and partial or total knee replacement.
Mr Sweetnam treats a broad range of patients, including professional and elite athletes, senior figures in business, media and public life, and military personnel. He has chaired The Future of Football Medicine at Camp Nou in Barcelona, organised in association with FIFA and supported by FC Barcelona, and serves in a surgical advisory role to the wider INEOS sports portfolio.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Sweetnam founded and chairs the INEOS Oxford Institute at the University of Oxford, supporting research into antimicrobial resistance and novel drug discovery. He is a Patron of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of the Guild of Benefactors of the University of Cambridge.

Our 79,000 sq ft, seven-story, private hospital on Wigmore Street has 39 en-suite inpatient rooms, consultation and treatment rooms, and a physiotherapy suite.
The hospital has a high-spec imaging suite fully equipped with an MRI, CT scanner and X-ray machine. There are three state-of-the-art operating theatres, two anaesthetic rooms and a recovery bay.

Our Wimbledon clinic houses a state-of-the-art imaging centre with a 3T MRI and X-ray scanners, Ultrasound, seven consulting rooms, two spacious waiting areas and well equipped treatment rooms all located on one level, ensuring easy accessibility for all patients.
Our partnership with Spire St Anthony’s Hospital allows us to provide orthopaedic surgery closer to our clinic. We treat a full range of conditions and perform joint replacement surgery using the latest Mako robotic assisted technology.

We are open Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 8.00pm, and Saturday mornings from 8.30am to 12.30pm.
If you are travelling by Tube, our closest underground station is Wimbledon (District Line), which also has rail and tramlink services from central London and beyond.
There is no parking available at the clinic, but we have a number of parking facilities all within a 10-12 minute walk of the clinic: Centre Court Car Park, Broadway Car Park, and Hartfield Road Car Park. Please note that all of these facilities are paid car parks.
