What is a DEXA scan?
Bone mineral density
Measures the strength and density of your bones, helping identify signs of bone loss and assess fracture risk.
Fat mass
Shows your total and regional body fat percentage, helping you understand changes in body composition over time.
Lean muscle mass
Shows the amount of lean tissue in your body, including muscle, which can be useful when looking at strength, performance and recovery.
Body composition distribution
Shows how fat and lean mass are distributed throughout your body, helping build a more complete picture of your physical health.

Who can benefit from a DEXA scan?
DEXA scanning can provide useful information for a wide range of people, from those monitoring their bone health to athletes tracking changes in body composition.
People at risk of fractures
DEXA can help identify bone loss, support the assessment of osteoporosis and provide information about fracture risk. Repeat scans may also be used to monitor changes over time.
Athletes and high performers
Detailed muscle and fat measurements can help inform training, recovery, nutrition and strength programmes, while giving you objective data to track progress.
People on a health journey
DEXA can help you understand your body composition beyond weight alone, allowing you to monitor changes in fat mass and lean muscle over time.
Older adults
DEXA can help identify reductions in bone density and support strategies focused on maintaining bone strength, mobility and long-term health.

What to expect
Before your scan
You will be given information about how to prepare for your appointment and asked to complete a DEXA scan questionnaire in advance.

The scan is non-invasive and uses a low dose of X-rays to measure bone density and body composition.
After your scan
