Donald Sammut

Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon


Mr Sammut has a special interest in nerve and microsurgery, tendon repair and reconstruction, sports injuries and tendon transfers for paralysis. He treats a wide range of degenerative, traumatic and congenital hand and wrist conditions in both adults and children. He regularly treats hand conditions in musicians as well as in professional sportsmen and women, particularly rowers (the British Olympic team) and rugby players.

Recent and current appointments

  • Full time private practice in Bath and London
  • Visiting Lecturer in Anatomy, University of Bristol
  • Visiting Senior Lecturer Kirtipur University Hospital (Hand Surgery), Kathmandu, Nepal
  • For the past 20 years, he has run a biannual surgical programme in India and Nepal, operating on patients with leprosy, and training local surgeons. He runs the Charity Working Hands, which handles this pro bono work

Publications, lectures and teaching

  • Numerous publications and book chapters. Most concern aspects of repair and reconstruction after trauma as well as original innovations in hand surgery
  • Frequent and regular invited lecturer and teacher at national and international meetings and workshops
  • Trainer and Mentor for the Diploma in Hand Surgery (British and European), as well as the FRCS (Orth) and FRCS (Plast). Examination setter and examiner for the British Diploma in Hand Surgery

  • British Society for Surgery of the Hand: On Council 1996-2000 and 2015-18
  • European Association of Medical Illustrators
