David Ward

Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon

FRCSOrth FRCSEd

David Ward specialises in lower limb joint replacement surgery including hip replacement, hip resurfacing, revision hip replacement and knee replacement.

He qualified from Westminster Hospital in 1985 and undertook his higher surgical and orthopaedic training around London, being admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons in London and in Edinburgh in 1989. After a hip surgery fellowship in Switzerland he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton in 1995 and at Kingston Hospital after the subsequent merger. He was involved from the outset in setting up the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) and was Clinical Director for Surgery, until taking over as Medical Director there from 2013 to 2017.

He has a particular interest and expertise in hip replacement surgery, especially younger patients, complex cases and hip revision surgery. Virtually all his work is lower limb joint replacement and he carries out a high volume of hip and knee replacements at SWLEOC and privately. A successful modern joint replacement offers relief from pain and return to excellent function – all his outcomes are carefully monitored through a research programme at SWLEOC and through submission of all cases to the National Joint Registry (NJR). A choice of implants are used, ensuring the best available option for the individual patient.

He is a regular invited faculty member at international hip meetings with areas of interest and expertise including ceramic bearing surfaces, uncemented implant fixation and revision surgery.

Conditions he can advise on and treat include joint replacement for painful hip and knee arthritis, hip impingement, hip tendinopathies, fractures around hip replacements and hip fractures. He is also an expert in revision hip surgery and problems to do with failing hip replacements, including metal-on-metal related issues and second opinions. In addition to his joint replacement work, David Ward is also very experienced in amputation surgery having been the orthopaedic surgeon for the renowned Roehampton Rehabilitation Unit since 1995.
