Open arthrolysis of the elbow surgery

This procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic using ‘open’ surgery, along with an injection in the elbow which numbs it to reduce pain afterwards.

What does it involve?

Arthrolysis involves making an incision, usually over the tip of the elbow, to treat arthritis or other bone deformities.

What to expect after surgery

You will need to stay in hospital for at least one night
Most people are able to move the joint straight away
Daily tasks, such as getting dressed, using a keyboard, and eating are usually possible within a couple of days
You may need to wear an elbow brace to help support the joint
